Titanic Movie Review

The movie Titanic was made in 1997 about the love story of Jack Dawson and Rose Dewitt Bukater on board the infamous Titanic. The story is told in a very unique way through the memories of an old Rose, as she recalls the voyage on board a submarine looking at the wreckage many years later. Rose was a girl from a wealthy family and was on the boat with her whole family and her fiance and his family. Jack had just won a ticket to board the ship in a poker match minutes before the boat took off. Jack was not in the same social class as Rose and her family were and back then that meant everything. Jack saves Roses life in the beginning of the movie by rescuing her from the bow of the ship where she was about to jump off. They fall in love and tensions rise between them and Rose’s fiance and their families.

One of my favorite aspects of the movie is that it was told through a very old Roses point of view. I loved when they would go back to filming her in the submarine recalling the incidents. It made me feel much more connected to the story because you could see how emotionally difficult it was for her to tell her story. I thought that was a very creative and effective technique. The music in this movie is amazing, the song ‘My Heart Will Go On’ has a really strong melancholy feel to it and it is still a very famous song. I also loved the scene down below the deck when jack and Rose are dancing to the Irish music with all of those people and she gets up on her tiptoes and the collapses. There were many great shots of them dancing that I appreciate now that I’ve learned how hard and important it it to get many shots from many angles of the same thing to make a scene more interesting to watch. The scenes towards the end are really powerful and i think that one of the most effective techniques was the light. The lighting down below the deck where they were putting coal into the fire makes you know how hot and sweaty and stressful it was down there. And the lighting used in the main parts of the boat when it was empty gave the illusion that everything was okay(in the section for the higher class people). The way they filmed the jack running for his life and trudging through the water made you want to jump up and scream “HURRY!!!!”.

I had seen this movie once as a kid, but didn’t really remember much and it is my best friends favorite movie so when I told her I hadn’t seen it I naturally had to. I see why this is a top 100 movie and many people's favorite. It has that ‘Romeo and Juliet’ like forbidden romance, and the heart wrenching, tear jerking scenes of the boat crashing into the iceberg. I would definitely recommend this film to anyone and everyone. I think it is a classic movie that is all around amazing and everyone should see it at some point in their life. I also think it’s a move that the more times you watch it, the better it gets. The beautiful scenes when the families are out to dinner or in their quarters with all of the lavish clothing and decor, and the scenes where you get to watch jack and Roses love unfold, and the scene when Rose refuses to get onto a boat with her mother without Jack are all reasons to see this movie.
